How to create a blog or website

Create a blog or website from scratch

Starting a blog site is the easiest way to express your feelings, ideas and knowledge about a particular topic.

Many aspiring bloggers have their own reasons to create a blog. Some are for expressing their opinions, for personal blog, to show knowledge and majority of them are to earn money.

There are hundreds of people starting a blog everyday and after certain weeks or months, they fail because they execute it in a wrong way.

Starting a blog is easy, but maintaining it is where the true battle begins. Starting a blog from scratch falls into 5 steps:

  1. Choose your niche
  2. Pick your blogging platform
  3. Choose your domain and hosting
  4. Select your theme and customize it
  5. Start blogging

Step 1: Choose your niche

Choosing your niche is the hardest part when you create a blog. A niche is a topic and you need to make sure that you’re interested or have the passion in that particular topic.

It will be the hardest decision because it will ‘make or break’ your blogging career.

Many bloggers chooses a broad niche. A broad niche is a topic that cover almost every micro niche. For example of broad niche is technology. In technology, there are Android, iOS, Computers, Gadgets and other ‘tech’ related stuffs.

Another example is Health niche. It covers, weight loss, fitness, Yoga, stress, skin disease, hair loss, etc.

So what you should choose?

You should choose micro niche.

Why?

Because you cannot beat major website when you start a broad niche. It will be hard to rank on search engines, for example, Google. You don’t want to do that.

Because if you don’t rank, at least on top 5 pages on google search results, you’ll have no traffic. Hence no money at all.

Remember: more traffic = more money

For example, if you like Tech topic, niche it down to Android.

Don’t stop, niche is down more to Android rooting or Android wallpapers or Android Apps and Games.

The goal is to niche down. In this way, you’re website will rank better because Google, will see it as if you have the expertise and knowledge on that topic.

Be sure that, if you choose your niche, make sure you will have the capability of writing of at least 100 articles.

Think big if you want to create a blog or website

Step 2: Pick your blogging platform

After you choose your niche, you need to choose your blogging platform. There are many blogging platforms to launch your website. There are blogger, tumblr, wordpress, drupal, joomla and many other platforms.

In this article, we will be talking only about Blogger and WordPress since it it the most popular ones.

I will categorize this in 2: Paid and FREE.

The FREE ones are Blogger and WordPress.com.

Read:

Why is it free? Because you don’t have to pay for domain and hosting.

But,

There are disadvantages in it.

1. Your domain will look like this blogtrainee.blogspot.com or blogtrainee.wordpress.com

  • If you’re comfortable with that domain, then go for it.
  • If you’re just new to the world of blogging, you can use it to test your capability to run a website.
  • You can change the domain after you decided to make it look like professional custom domain. You just need to map it with blogger or wordpress but it costs like $10 per custom domain per year.

2. You can’t customize it the way you want it.

  • Very limited plugins. You can’t install additional plugins and no access to the source code of your website to fully customize it.
  • There are best theme for blogger and wordpress.com but you can’t customize it.

3. They can delete it anytime

  • This is the  most important, you don’t have the rights on your website. If you violate google or wordpress.com’s terms and condition, they can delete it anytime and you have nothing to do about it.

The paid one is WordPress.org. And yes wordpress.com and wordpress.org is different.

If you want to brand your website or to make it look like professional, you should go for wordpress.org. You download the wordpress CMS and upload it to your hosting.

In wordpress.org, you have the full rights on the website. You can do almost anything on your blog, customize it, install plugins, use custom domain and many more.

But,

It will costs you.

By how much?

  • Domain($10/year) + Hosting($40/year) + premium theme($69) = $119 or
  • Domain($10/year) + Hosting($40/year) + FREE theme = $50

That is just my approximation. Different providers have different prices and promotions.

Step 3: Choose your domain and hosting

Choosing a domain is one of the hardest decision you’ll ever make in starting a blog. The domain will represent on how it is professional or brandable when you create a blog or website.

A good domain is 1 to 2 words. For example, blogtrainee.com is a 2 word domain. 3 words is acceptable if you cannot find a 2 word domain.

You should choose a domain that is related to your topic or have the main keyword in your domain. You don’t want to choose healthtrainee.com if you are blogging about Blogs.

For example:

  • blogtrainee.com – about blogging and how to start a blog
  • androidcentral – about android
  • pcmag.com – about computers and PC tech

Honestly, it took me 1-2 hours in choosing my domain. Because I want a good looking domain, I need to search words related to blog or starting a blog.

So what if the domain you want is already taken?

You need to search for synonyms or related words.

Originally, I want blogtraining.com because it’s about starting a blog but that is already taken. I go to google.com type ‘training synonyms’ and viola, you’ll have many synonyms which you can use.

So if you want a professional looking blog site, you need good looking domain and hosting. In hosting, we cover earlier by how much it will costs you to create a blog or website but like I said, it depends upon the promos of different hosting provider.

For example, in bluehost, the domain is free when you first sign up in their website.

Another great hosting is namecheap and in fact, blogtrainee.com is hosted on namecheap.com. They have good offer and much cheaper than the others. I will cover in another article about the comparison of different hosting provider. But for now, stick with these 2 hosting that I highly recommended.

Namecheap.com

Step 4: Select your theme and customize it

Selecting your theme is another hardest decision you’ll ever make. It will be the face of your blog.

It will reflect on how good you are and remember first impression, lasts.

There are paid and free wordpress themes. Paid themes is a premium theme in which you have the benefit of support. It means that if you are having problems in your theme, you can contact the developer in which you bought the theme.

Here are my recommended site if you decide to buy premium theme:

After you bought a theme, you have to customize it. Upload your logo, change layout, install necessary plugins and customize it the way you want it.

On the other hand, there are FREE WordPress themes. In fact there are lots of good free themes. You can also customize it depends on the terms of the developer.

Some developers prefer to put their name on the footer of the site to give theme credit. But there are also free theme which you can fully customize it.

Where to download it?

Well, non other than the wordpress.org itself. It has a huge list of good free themes and be sure to pick up what you really like.

Step 5: Start blogging

So by now, you have a running blog in a hosting provider  with custom domain and theme. If you find setting up a blog is hard, then maintaining it and posting articles regularly is harder.

Especially if have no courage and interest.

Regular posting is very important in maintaining your blog.

Why? Because:

  • Google wants fresh content
  • Google will rank your site with updated content
  • Your readers will go back and hence more traffic will be generated

Many bloggers fail because they cannot post articles regularly.

So how frequent is regular posting?

You need to post at least twice a week to keep your rank stable. Much more is better if you have the time. Don’t post once 1 month. It will hurt your blog and google doesn’t want old, outdated content.

Final Words

So creating a blog or website is easy and in order to create a blog, you need these 5 steps:

  1. Choose your niche
  2. Pick your blogging platform
  3. Choose your domain and hosting
  4. Select your theme and customize it
  5. Start blogging

Be sure to post regularly because this will make or break your blogging career. If you have any questions, just contact me on the comment section below.
